Why Does BoJack Keep Hurting the People He Loves?

BoJack hurts those closest to him (Herb, Todd, Princess Carolyn) because of a subconscious defense mechanism: pre-emptive rejection. Driven by a deep fear of abandonment, he pushes people away to control when and how the relationship ends, rather than waiting to be surprised by their inevitable departure.

Fear of Abandonment

BoJack’s core belief is that he is unlovable and that everyone will eventually leave him once they see the "real" him. This anxiety creates a paradox: he desperately wants intimacy, but the moment he gets it, he feels unsafe.

Pre-emptive Self-Sabotage

The logic of his trauma is: "If I hurt you first, you can't hurt me." By sabotaging the relationship (like sleeping with Emily or firing Princess Carolyn), he turns a potential heartbreak into a predictable disaster that he caused. It gives him agency over his own misery.

Control Through Damage

Damaging a relationship is a way of testing it. BoJack pushes boundaries to see if people will stay.

  • If they leave: "See? I was right. I am poison." (Validation of negative belief).
  • If they stay: He respects them less or pushes harder until they break.

It is a lose-lose game designed to prove his own worst fears.

Guilt and the Shame Loop

After hurting someone, BoJack feels immense guilt. However, instead of making amends, he wallows in shame. This shame becomes self-focused ("I feel so bad about what I did"), which ironically makes him ignore the feelings of the person he hurt, leading to further neglect and pain.

Real-Life Psychological Parallel

This behavior mirrors Disorganized Attachment style. In real life, people with this pattern crave love but equate it with pain. They often find themselves in a cycle of "Come here, go away," leaving their partners confused and devastated.
